The cross was not God’s invention – it was our own. In a world that demands an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth; what transpired on the cross is evidence of how God responds to our demand for blood – that instead of satisfying our desires for blood – God simply offered up his own. On the cross we see Jesus’ sacrifice not to sate God’s wrath, but instead, God’s response to our own. That faced with our greed, our thirst for revenge and wrath, God would rather forgive – not to get even. On the cross we see a God who is willing to love us and forgive what we have done, even to the point of death.
